- Kanye Omari West is an American rapper and record producer who was born in Atlanta, Georgia. He rose to fame as a producer at Roc-A-Fella Records, where he achieved critical acclaim for his work on Jay-Z's albumThe Blueprint. He also produced hit singles for a number of artists, including Alicia Keys, Ludacris and Janet Jackson. In 2004, West released a debut album of his own: The College Dropout. Since then, he has had five studio albums, all of which have gone platinum, as well as a collaborative effort with Jay-Z called Watch The Throne. He is the third best-selling artist in digital sales in the past decade. Kanye also set up his own record label, GOOD Music, which houses artists such as John Legend, Common and Kid Cudi. However, his career has been plagued with controversy, not least for his brash public statements (including that Taylor Swift "Ima let you finish" MTV VMAs moment in 2009).
